Your feelings may never be enough

A while ago I had a very beautiful experience of love & grace. Amidst having failed to meet God’s standard. It simply hit me that in this life, I never will.

It’s all good and well that we want to please God by never sinning again, crazy love will do that to you. However, I think we’ll both agree that it’s a bit foolish to think that after decades of sinning we will “forget” something embedded in our nature.

For the believer, we can only get better as we grow in holiness. Yes, grow. Not lose and then (maybe) regain - Grow.

And this process can a bit painful for people (such as myself) who want the process to happen quicker.

The revelation is enhanced in, but not exclusive to, marriage, love, and relationships. When you feel a certain way towards anyone you love sincerely. Whether they are a mother, a father, a child, a spouse or sibling. In a moment of utter saturation in love for that person, the following statement isn’t impossible:

“I want to give you the world, the moon, and the stars. It’s just that I’m dead broke.”

As large as the desire in our hearts for the other person is. In such a moment, we will realise that nothing we want to, or can ever do, will ever be enough to truly express the manner in which we feel for that person.

And it’s the same with our love for Jesus. We may go, 100 years without sinning, but that will never be enough for us to say we have exhausted our love for Him and our desire for the expression of it.

We may witness to 100 000 people and beyond, but that will never be enough to express our love for him. At the very most, we would only be obedient servants because we would have only done what we were told! (Read Luke 7:9)

That’s why it is so important to rest in knowing that what Jesus did on the cross for us was enough. If it were a matter of he did most of the work and now we have to do the rest, we would fail dismally, because as much as we love Jesus, we cannot yet fully express that love.

Such is the hope of life in heaven. Where we aren’t held back by our sinful flesh, but we are free to live, in love, for our saviour Jesus who gave his life for us.
